Alabama-raised rapper Flo Milli has come a long way from her first performance at a high school talent show. Now the spitter is busy counting up millions of streams for her viral songs and taking in shout outs from the likes of Rico Nasty and Cardi B. Like the rest of the country she’s currently stuck in quarantine but isn’t letting that stop her from staying creative and pushing out new content.
Flo Milli called up Music Choice recently to chat about forging ahead in her career, her legions of fans, that big shout out from Cardi, and much more. Check out the chat below!
Music Choice: Since quarantine started are you feeling creative or has it been hard to get in the mindset of writing and recording?
Flo Milli: I feel more creative. There’s nothing else to do. I have no choice but to sit there and get things done! I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve been working on my singing and trying out new stuff.
MC: You mentioned singing, what other things are you doing to stretch yourself as an artist?
FM: Since I was younger, I’ve always known how to make videos and just make things look cool. As time and technology have evolved I’ve always tried to say on top of it. I’m trying to focus on new styles and not stick to one vibe.
MC: As you come up with new vibes and styles do you ever get concerned your very passionate fans may not be down with a new direction?
FM: I’ve been thinking about that actually. It’s crazy you asked. I think I’ve reached a level where my fans will be accepting of whatever I put out. Now maybe I have some leverage to try some dumb sh*t [laughs].
MC: You can experiment and maybe get a little weird!
FM: Really the stuff you least expect is what always blows up! I didn’t expect “Beef FloMix” to blow at all. It ended up being the big one.
MC: Have you thought about as we go on into quarantine how you’re going to be able to create new content and get yourself out into the world as an artist?
FM: We are getting everything together. My team has been recording all the trips I’d taken over the past year. I plan on putting it all together and giving it as a piece to my fans. A lot of people don’t know my personality. They only know me through the music.
MC: Is your real-life persona that different than what fans get from your music?
FM: When people meet me they may get a soft and humble vibe. Which I am! You’re always going to get Flo Milli. Once I’m able to start doing shows again and becoming a bigger artist I’ll be able to show more of me.
MC: Besides working on your music how else have you been spending your downtime?
FM: I’ve been planning my future. I write down song ideas. I watch a lot of YouTube. I like it more than TV and I can sit there for hours. I’ll watch videos on astrology or other things I’m into.
MC: You have mentioned online a couple of times about the XXL Freshman list, how much would it mean to you to make it?
FM: I would be so surprised since I’m still such a new artist and it’s really only my second year doing this, but I’d be very grateful. It’d definitely be a win.
MC: It may only be your second year, but you’ve got massive streaming numbers and even a shoutout from Cardi B. Do you remember when you found out about that?
FM: Oh my god! I was sleeping when she uploaded the video and I woke up to my phone buzzing like crazy. I was like “who is doing that?!” I found out Cardi posted my song and I was so happy. I jumped up and went to tell my mom. It was a good moment!
ME TOO ! She have a unique catchy voice and good songs ! https://t.co/XLPj8E7b97

MC: That’s a pretty big co-sign!
FM: She doesn’t just f*ck with anybody. If she does you know you’re working with something.
MC: Lastly, do you have a message for any fans reading the interview?
FM: Follow your dreams and don’t give up on anything!
